The art of asking for help
(I'm not good at it)
So here goes.
I had a hard time deciding whether or not to start a crowd-funding campaign, and a similarly difficult time figuring out if I should post this on my professional webpage.
But you know what? This incident has affected the way that I am able to make a living through my art, so of course both of the above are appropriate measures to take. This has not only been a lesson in ALWAYS to have full coverage insurance, but that it's ok to reach out to your community and ask for help every so often. That's what community is all about, right?
Here's what happened in a nutshell, copied from my IndieGoGo page:
"I should preface this for those who don't know me. I am a self employed performer who travels long distances often via car for gigs and work. I also now live in LA where it is almost imperative to own a vehicle to get anywhere.
Back in February of this year, I was in Las Vegas for a gig at an off the strip casino. Long story short, upon trying to retrieve my car from the valet, he took it upon himself to get into a collision with another vehicle the lot, rendering my vehicle not safe to drive back home. In the ensuing 3.5 months, the casino tried to deny that the situation happened, eventually only starting to settle with me after I started the small claims process. I've reached a settlement with them that does not take into consideration that my perfectly fine running vehicle (I put a lot of work into it to make sure that it was reliable!) that is my main source of helping me pay my rent and bills is now totaled through no fault of my own. Unfortunately because my car was not a new vehicle, it's not worth much on paper, so the settlement will not afford me to acquire another vehicle that I can go long distances in safely. I also did not have full coverage on my car, so my insurance company couldn't do anything to help. I've consulted lawyers, but since this is only considered a small claims situation, they could only give me vague advice.
The kicker is that a casino...a casino! How much money flows in and out of there on a daily basis?!?...did nothing to remedy the situation or even try to sugar coat it in a timely manner. In the release form that I just had to sign, they are still denying responsibility. Not only am I out my vehicle, I feel helpless against a corporate entity who could care less about making right a situation that one of their employees created. And now, their new angle of non-responsibility is arguing with me about how to transfer the title to them (apparently the rules in CA and in NV are different), and it feels like they are stalling AGAIN on the settlement process. It's incredibly frustrating, mind numbing, and completely out of my control to do anything but roll over for them. This is not my nature, so it's taken a lot for me to try to let go of the situation...and to reach out for help.
I am only being compensated enough money to pay off the costs that I accrued through this, or to take a chance on a less than stellar car that would probably cost me more in the long run. The reason that I am asking for help is to get back on my feet (wheels) so that I may make my rehearsals and gigs and art modeling sessions and shows that I produce and work of various natures by being able to make a down payment on a reliable vehicle and afford the payments until my work picks up again (it's possible that I've lost some recurring work because of my inability to travel to them, and it will take a second to reestablish).
If you can help monetarily, awesome! Thank you!
If you can't, I totally get it. Would you consider passing this along to colleagues and friends that may be able to please? And thank you!
I feel like I want to give back as well, so if I know you and am in your area when I get mobile again, let me give you a ride! If I don't know you, let me send you some gluten free/dairy free yummy cookies (affectionately called JubJubs)! If you are able to donate a large sum and are California based (or are in a city that I will be in for more than a day), lets have a sushi party...I make some kickass sushi, if I do say so myself."

Thank you for reading this far! Truly, any amount helps, even if it's just passing this on to your comrades. I appreciate you!
